Ernie Irvan, hoping to add to his NASCAR points lead with a victory in the Budweiser 500, broke his track qualifying record to take the pole for tomorrow's Dover, Del., race.
Irvan, driving a Ford Thunderbird, toured the one-mile Dover Downs International Speedway at 151.956 mph. That was enough to edge fellow Ford driver Geoff Bodine, whose 151.745 gave him the outside of the front row for the running of the $931,186 event.
COLLEGES
Justin Leonard of Texas took advantage of ideal scoring conditions and hometown support in McKinney, Texas, to shoot a career-best 63 and take a one-shot lead in the NCAA golf championships.
Leonard has a 54-hole total of 202. Oklahoma State's Alan Bratton is second at 203 after shooting a 66.
Mikko Rantanen of Georgia Tech is at 205, while teammate Stewart Cink and three others are two strokes further back. Also at 207 are Stanford's Notah Begay III, defending champion Todd Demsey of Arizona State and Clemson's Mark Swygert. Demsey and Swygert shot 65s under almost calm conditions.
Begay, who shared the second-round lead with Rantanen after Begay shot an NCAA record 10-under 62, struggled with his putter and faded to 73.
Stanford and Georgia Tech enter today's final round tied at 847, two shots better than Arkansas, top-seeded Oklahoma State and defending champion Florida.

SAILING
The Whitbread 60 Yamaha and Maxi New Zealand Endeavour held on easily to win their respective classes as the Whitbread Round the World Race ended in Southampton, England, in record fashion. W60 Tokio won the 3,818-mile sixth leg, which began May 21 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in 12 days, 19 hours, 36 minutes, 27 seconds, breaking the leg record of 17:00:23:15.
Winston was second, 51 minutes behind Tokio. Yamaha was next, 30 minutes behind Winston.
Yamaha won its class by 14 1/2 hours over Intrum Justitia. Endeavour, fourth across the finish line, was the first Maxi to finish, 3:19 behind Tokio, which gave it the overall race title. with a time of 120:05:09:23 for the 31,975-mile race.
TENNIS
Ellis Rubin, a Miami attorney, contends that tennis star Jennifer Capriati bought drugs for his client and seduced him into becoming a drug user again after he had come clean. He said he would sue Capriati and her attorney next week on behalf of his client, Nathan Wilson, 18.
